Big Wave off Baggy Point

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

The last couple of weeks we’ve had some brilliant surf here in North Devon.  Waves have been firing up and down the coast.  On Sunday, as we were walking along the coast line over Baggy Point (to the north of Croyde bay) this monster wave, was crashing over a deep water reef I’ve never seen yeilding a wave before.  The sound was terrific.  It was a spectacular sight.  Can this be Croydes answer to Mavericks?

The end of Baggy Point is a set of shear cliffs and jagged spikes of rocks popular with Climbers on a lower tide and calmer day.  Any Jeff Clark wannabes out there, get on it!  I recon it was high tide and Croyde was working on a westerly swell with 8+ foot on the beach, 20+ foot at the sea buoy.  The average period was 13 seconds but the peak period was 25 seconds.

Will I be ready for it, next time this sleeping beauty awakens? … no.

PS If anyone knows the name of this wave (it’s not Oysters / Oyster Falls - that’s off Down-end point), please let me know :-)

Edit: Update… the name of the elusive big wave have been found, apparently it’s called ‘Leapies’ … maybe because of the cliffs??

November Croyde Session Palettes

Sunday, November 30th, 2008
Here are two palettes I created on friday after a surfing down at Croyde…

Muddy waves, sunny days. Inspired by a nice session on Croyde this afternoon, sun shining, 7 degrees, 2-3foot clean ish and mellow. Grey clouds lashing over lundy and a bright red sunset fuzz over heartland. Foam on the faces and powder blue skies.
